MAGNETIC ATTACKS - electromagnetic investigations in public space
In her talk "MAGNETIC ATTACKS - electromagnetic investigations in public space", Christina Kubisch turns toward an acoustic world that is usually inaudible. Her work is rooted in magnetic induction, as well as research into hydrophonic sounds and solar energy. Sound installations, performances and compositions make hidden fields of waves and signals perceptible, while also addressing the social and political conditions connected to these frequencies.
Since the late 1970s, Kubisch has developed electromagnetic induction from a basic technique into an individual artistic tool. In 2003 she began Electrical Walks: public walks using specially sensitive wireless headphones that render above- and underground electromagnetic fields audible. Built-in coils respond to waves in the environment, allowing the signals of light systems, communications technology, radar, surveillance, transport networks and countless other infrastructures to be heard.
The resulting sound palette changes from place to place: dense high and low frequencies, rhythmic loops, tiny signals and long drones. Kubisch's Electrical Walks have been presented in 98 cities worldwide, transforming familiar urban environments through listening.
