Sounding Kites – The Art of Kite Making and Wind-Harps
“Sounding Kites – The Art of Kite Making and Wind-Harps” is a two-day workshop in which participants make paper Rokkaku kites and bamboo wind harps. Attached to the kites, the harps begin to sound as soon as they take flight. Making, listening and flying meet in an encounter with wind as both material and collaborator: air and movement shape the instruments’ sound, while each kite gives it a particular form.
All workshop participants are warmly invited to join “Into the Blue”, a performance for collective kite-flying and an aeolian orchestra. Wind-driven flutes and kite-borne harps sound from the sky, accompanied on the ground by overtone flutes and a wind ensemble. The presentation extends the workshop into a shared public situation.
Siedl/Cao is the Vienna-based transdisciplinary artist duo Cao Thanh Lan from Vietnam and Gregor Siedl from Austria, working together since 2013. Their practice spans kinetic sound installations, wearable sonic sculptures, sound interventions and contemporary music theatre. They understand sound as a social artefact carrying memory, association and cultural permeability, and often collaborate with audiences and natural forces in public space.
The workshop will stretch over 2 Days, from the 17. to the 18.09. Participation in only the second day, is sadly not possible.
