Thresholding
"Thresholding", by Kate Donovan, is a lecture~transmission that will take place in the liminal moments between day and night. It works with radio as a medium of betweens, attending to the concept of amphibiousness: the capacity to move between worlds of difference.
Using MicroFM as a method of gathering together in the phases of twilight, the work brings situated listening together with planetary shifts, staying with thresholds phenomena of movement and contact rather than simple dividing lines.
The work approaches radio as a fragile form that can hold multiple worlds together without collapsing their difference. It asks what kinds of attention may emerge in transitions: between day and night, land and water, human and more-than-human, research and artistic practice. Its lecture-transmission format offers a setting for thinking through these relations by listening together.
Kate Donovan is an artist-researcher whose practice and scholarship engage ecological thinking, listening, radio and the more-than-human. She completed her PhD, Radio as Relation: Listening across Worlds of Artistic Research, Technologies and the More-than-human, in 2025, and currently holds a postdoctoral fellowship with 4A_Lab in Berlin.
