Synoriaka Echωtopia
"Synoriaka Echωtopia" approaches the borderscape of Western Thrace in Greece through listening. Its title draws on synoro - border, shared edge - and on echo and place: a territory of echoes and the sounds that inhabit a landscape. The lecture performance follows a weave of margins, transitional spaces, unequal inclusion, negotiations over the right to listen and sound, and conditions of enforced transparency and aphonia.
The work attends to a land shaped by military drills, drones, border patrols, official speeches, religious rituals, cross-border tourism and dogs barking at those who pass through. It also listens for what is silenced by force: a forest made quiet after major wildfires, the compelled silence of people crossing the territory, and forms of erasure and oppression. Built from field recordings, texts and material gathered between 2024 and 2026, the performance considers listening as a method and an ethical question at the threshold.
Lefteris Krysalis is a sound artist and researcher working across experimental radio, electroacoustic composition and acoustic ecology. His practice investigates the politics of listening across field recordings, installations, radio transmissions and lecture performances. He is completing a PhD at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
