Artist Talk und Q&A: Attunement exercises
In his artist talk, Nicola Di Croce will introduce two participatory events he has organised around listening to the non-human. Beginning with the participants’ direct experiences, he will introduce basic notions of acoustic ecology. At the centre is the idea of attunement as a way of entering into resonance with the non-human, explored through the sound sources of the Venice lagoon and the relationship between infrastructure systems and wilder ecosystems.
Di Croce will also speak about the practical methods of these events. Participants were invited to follow simple vocal exercises and to enter into dialogue with problematic or potentially disturbing sound sources through the creation of experiential choirs. The events explored how a choir can attune with non-human sounds and culminated in a recording of the participants’ performative improvisation.
Nicola Di Croce is an architect, musician, sound artist and researcher. He holds a PhD in Regional Planning and Public Policies from Iuav University of Venice and has been a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at McGill University and Iuav University. He is Assistant Professor in Urban Planning at Iuav and co-founded the Sound Studies Hub research centre.
